Hi folks,
I found a great reference site/blog at http://www.cancerismybitch.com/ this guy keeps a list of survivor stories and blogs which has been very helpful to me as it reassures me that this is all very survivable and it prepares me for the experience buy giving me first hand accounts of what I will probably go through (although everyone is different).
On the preparation side you will probably not hear much on the blog for the next week or so as we are off to Ireland on Wednesday, back just in time for Christmas, then we have a Doctors appointment on the Thursday after Christmas to go through the treatment in depth with the transplant team. Following that we are probably going to scoot off for a few days in the MG and the Aston Martin to tour scotand and hopefully stay in nice hotels as we tour with the kids (hence the two cars as both are really two seaters).
Plan is to get the Hickman line put in on the 3rd start chemo either then or on the 4th which will be a hospital stay for me for a few days. Once the details are clear I will post them in the blog but that may be a few weeks away. In the meantime we are nest building, present buying, card writing, visiting relations and enjoying the holidays, I hope you all are too !
Cheers
Gerry

Gerry,
I just can't get Lee's comment from your previous blog out of my mind. Your analytical nature and gifted judgement are tremendous assets during this trial. Still, Lee's observation that your immune system must first succumb in order for your treatment to succeed is more than nettlesome for someone who knows you. I don't suppose that recommending the physicians actually try and kill you with treatment is the best advice, but I'd take you with that bet. Gerry vs Gerry is a different matter, and not a match I care to contemplate. I'm not sure how you'll know when to choose the right fight at the right time, but I trust you will. You're a special human being at just about everything other than tying knots.
Happy current and future holidays my friend,
Chumley
Gerry,
It's been a long time, guilty as charged especially as I had the address to this blog before but deleted it by mistake. Paul my brother called me to say you called in and gave him the link, your e-mail and phone number. I'll try phoning you this evening, so this will probably be ancient history by the time you read it. In your situation its hard to know what to say that's positive and beneficial so I'm not even going to try.
Its been quite a few years since we last talked, I remember you working for ICI making magnetic video tape, another technology biting the dust, and you now work for Gortex I think. This blog thing has given me a peek into your life now and it seems a) you're still a sports car nut, I remember your first, the red 911, and b) you seem to have a great family supporting you. An update on mine and me then seems fair. I work for a pharmaceutical company, ironically with the largest oncology portfolio of any company, Roche. I see in our company products and others that the big C is finally getting some real competition. So if there is a positive in getting Hodgkins its better to get it now than, as you say, 10 years ago. With every passing week there seems to be new cancer drugs and treatments so I'm sure there is one out there with your name on it. I came to work for Roche, Syntex as it was called then, intending to stay for a few months then go post doc'ing and learn a new language in France or Germany say. Of best laid plans I'm still here today and I now have 3 young children, Aaron 9, Seona 7 and Aine 4 and Ann my wife whom I met at work. The area is really nice and company is great. I didn't think I'd be saying that some 20 odd years ago. Seona and Aine are dragging at me to go and make them something to eat so I'll try ringing you later tonight.
Wish Lee, it seems too familiar since we have not met, a happy Christmas for me
Best wishes
Greg
Dear Greg,
Its been a long time since we talked but I have great memories of you taking on the whole school at football and still getting to the other side of the pitch. I have never since seen such raw talent with a ball it was a pity that your knee problems stopped you on that path.
I met Paul at the Windsor, got him confused with your other brother but we had a bit of a chat and Philip came in so it was nice to be back in Bangor and for folks to recognise me as I walked into a pub. Not that that is hard in my case!
Anyhow thanks for getting in touch and I got the background from Paul about your work for Roche which sounds really interesting. Next time I am over perhaps we can coordinate schedules, it seems like I missed you by a few days this time it would have been fun to see you again after about 20 years. I am sure my memories of school and university are wishful thinking on my part but only you and kerin Dallet could probalbly remind me of the bits I have already forgotten.
I hope you and yours have a great Christmas, thanks for getting in touch and best of luck to you !
Cheers
Gerry
